Have you just launched your website and are wishing to be found by your prospects and clients? Is appearing on the first page of Google search results – for free – your dream? Then, you are on the right blog.
Google, the most widely used search engine in the world, uses a complex algorithm in order to rank all the websites in its results pages. Here are a few SEO bases to keep in mind when you create your content and want to be well ranked.

1.Make sure that your Website is mobile-friendly

Google’s algorithm now takes into account your website’s mobile adaptability. If your website perfectly adapts to different kinds of devices, it is what we call a “responsive website” and is therefore better ranked. Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test enables you to check that the user will have the same experience – smooth and intuitive – on your website whether they access it from a mobile, a computer or a tablet. This tool is easy to use; simply click on the previous link and enter your URL.
It’s been proven that 94% of all smartphone users search for local information on their phone. Don’t overlook this step!

2. Check the speed of your pages and reduce it if need be

Your page has to load quickly, mostly to avoid a high bounce rate. A bounce happens when an internet user lands on your site and leaves immediately, without visiting any more pages. In fact, 40% of all users leave a page when it takes more than 3 seconds to load.
That’s why I’m advising you to use MozBar and Google’s PageSpeed Insights – the latter is easy to use (all you need to do is enter your URL) and gives you information about your pages’ status as well as advice on how to improve their speed.

You can also optimise your images by reducing them. With tinypng.com or Compress PNG/JPG (for images up to 50mb – which is 10x greater than tinypng.com), you can reduce the size (weight) of your medias without compromising their quality.
In my case, resizing the homepage image helped me load my page 3 times quicker.

Also, make sure that your website isn’t using too many plugins.

3. Create great content

An informative website will be better ranked than a superficial blog. For that reason it is essential to give yourself time to regularly write organized and thick content. Write texts that are more than 300 words-long – some experts even say 900 words-long – and composed of sentences that are not too short but not too long. Your content needs to be coherent and connected through linking words.

Don’t forget to organize your ideas by means of interlines, paragraphs, titles and subtitles. By the way, keep in mind that you have to respect your titles order. For example, you can’t go from a first level title (h2) to a third level title (h3).

4. Personalize your URLs

A great number of online newspapers and companies do not bother to rename their permalinks; they are wrong. The URLs of your pages should not be disregarded, especially when it comes to their potential to increase your click-through rate (CTR) in the search results. They also play a direct role in the ranking of your website. I’m suggesting you to go for a short URL that includes hyphens and your keywords.

5. Strategically include keywords

The strategic presence of keywords you’d like to be found for, for instance your field of activity and what you are selling, is highly important. It improves your ranking. As a matter of fact, the more popular a keyword, the harder it will be to be well ranked. A great number of people will search for this word and loads of popular sites will talk about it. Having said that, if you manage to be well ranked thanks to a popular keyword, you’ll win plenty of visitors. With the Keyword Explorer by Moz or Google Trends, enter a keyword and immediately find out its status, popularity and how hard it will be to be well-ranked on it. You’ll finally know what words should be at the core of your SEO strategy.

Be careful, although it is important to feature your keyword on the title and body of your page, Google’s algorithm won’t like it if you use it excessively or in an incoherent manner. Use it well in the title of your page, your subtitles and in the body of your text.

6. Create links

In order to be well-ranked, you’ll have to create a system of links that will connect your website to other websites – that’s what we call ‘link building’. To do so, you have to create internal links on your website that are pointing to other parts of your website itself. It will improve your ranking in two ways: directly; by showing the quality of your website regarding this keyword, and indirectly; by contributing to a lower bounce rate.
Incoming links (backlinks) are also an important part of your strategy. When people talk about you on the internet, on renowned websites, and when you are present on social media: your domain authority is improved.

Be careful, you have to make sure that the websites you give a vote of confidence to are secure and renowned. Thanks to the Chrome and Firefox add-on, Web of Trust, you can quickly check the reliability of a website. If you want to verify the quality of a website, do not hesitate to check its authority – also known as Domain Authority (on a scale from 1 to 100) – by using the Moz add-on.

7. Benefit from mainstream subjects and news topics

When a subject is widely talked about and under the spotlights, take the occasion to talk about it and improve your visibility. Your company is in the catering business? Start a blog and talk about the new trendy cooking shows. Adapt what’s in the news to what you’re selling and it’s in the bag! To help you find popular subjects, use Google Trends.
